Run coaching for beginners: Is it worth it?

Running is often thought of as a solo activity, which is both a benefit and a drawback. You don’t need a team to play running like you would for football. To run, you just need yourself and a pair of running shoes which makes the sport easily accessible. Though, it can be boring running with just you and your thoughts, which makes it hard to stick to a training plan.

Run coaching offers accountability, adaptability, and community.

A running coach prescribes workouts each week to cater to your busy life and schedule. They can check each week to see how you progressed in the training plan, and if you are making progress toward your goal. They may check-in to clarify things that they see as patterns, a workout that didn’t go well, but also to celebrate milestones and good weeks.

Running itself can also keep you accountable. Perhaps you have a time you are trying to break, or you signed up for a really far distance. The only way to train for the distance or time safely is to follow a training program consistently. By following a training plan, you will set yourself up to meet your goals easier and push yourself to the next level.

Sometimes, you miss a run. You miss a week of running. You miss a month of running. You haven’t run in years. You aren’t sure where to start. You are coming back from injury. Maybe you are also considering signing up for a distance race you have never run before. Running is a sport, and with any physical activity that is sustained over a long period of time there will always be a risk of injuries and mishaps. A run coach can create a plan that is designed specifically for you to help minimize risks and optimize gains to help you meet your goals.

There are many local run clubs to join for community. The Road Runners Club of America offers organized running groups which can be found here. There are run clubs which are based on identity groups to meet more people like yourself. There are local run clubs to meet a wide array of fellow runners.
